Typoetry and not typography: meaning plays with form, it is born from it and imposes it. The works of the great typographers of the 20th century are present: Maximilien Vox, Cassandre’s Bifur, Piet Zwart, the Americans Martin Solomon and Herb Lubalin, Raymond Gid, Guy Levis Mano. But, placed under the auspices of Michel Leiris, the book exposes the visual poetry of the Germans Gomringer, Mon, Rühm, of the Brazilians of Campos and Pignatari, of Emmet Williams, of Christian Dotremont, of Jacques Roubaud; and the typoems of painters, Matisse, Magritte, Duchamp, Lissitzky, Raymond Hains, Jiri Kollar, Jasper Johns and Valerio Adami.

Jérôme Peignot, born June 10, 1926 in Paris, is a French novelist, poet, specialist in typography and pamphleteer. He is the nephew of Charles Peignot, director of the Deberny et Peignot foundry. The author of around thirty books, he made a name for himself by winning the Sainte-Beuve Prize, by participating in various political actions, by publishing Les Écrits de Laure and by directing an important work on “Typoésie”.
