This is the second publication within the series Hall of Femmes. Hall of Femmes is a project initiated by the design studio Hjärta Smärta in 2009 with the objective of bringing female graphic designers and art directors into the spotlight.
Lillian Bassman began as an assistant to Alexey Brodovitch at Harper’s Bazaar by the end of the 1940’s, in the very epicentre of the golden age of the American magazine culture. In 1945she became art director for the newly launched Junior Bazaar, a fashion magazine focused on teenagers. Junior Bazaarfunctioned as an experimental workshop and a hot-bed for all kinds of young creative talents. When the magazine discontinued publication after merely three years, Lillian Bassman instead trained herself to become a photographer and became one of Harper’s Bazaars most hired photographers.
