This book traces the life and work of J. H. Mason from his humble beginnings to recognition as one of the great scholar-printers of the 20:th Century. His way from being an apprentice in the Ballantyne Press to the Doves Press, where he worked in close collaboration with T. J. Cobden-Sanderson and Sir Emery Walker, is covered. Being one of the initiator of the first Printing Day Technical School and later on co-working with Count Kessler at the Cranach Press, Erik Gill, Edward Johnston and J. B. Prince his typographic mastership is presented. Various articles in The Imprint and the designing of the Imprint type also gave him a reputation, penetrated by the author Leslie Owens.
