Any serious book collector (and the most serious belong to New York’s Grolier Club, that pre-eminent shrine for bibliophiles) harbors a latent penchant for book lists, particularly when presented in neat doses of one hundred titles. Here then are the 100 greatest printed books of the 20th century (at least in the opinions of Grolier’s Messrs. Hutner and Kelly), from L’Imprimerie Nationale’s 1900 pressing of Paul Verlaine’s Parallèlement, with lithographs by Pierre Bonnard, to Wild Carrot Letterpress’s illustrated 1996 selection of Rumi’s poetry Divan-E-Shams. Each is represented by one large sample page, reproduced in duotone or colour.
”This is a book that all lovers of printing as a fine art will acquire & pore over: hardly a page does not offers something to arouse interest & satisfy the eye.” Bibliographical Society of America.
