”The Swing”, among the most reproduced works of the 18th century, this painting was first commissioned by the baron de Saint-Julien, tax-officer for the French clergy, to the painter Doyen. His mistress is to be depicted on a swing pushed by a bishop with the baron conveniently placed so as to be able to see the young woman’s legs and even more…Shocked, Doyen refuses and directs Monsieur De Saint-Julien towards Jean-Honoré Fragonard, the painter of gallantries known and appreciated as such.
Despite the depravity of the subject, the artist manages to combine a whole century’s lust for life with a pantheistic vision of nature.
