This thesis describes a collection of early typefounding matrices at the Norstedts typefoundry in Stockholm which are a very rare and precious commodity with an important bearing on the study of early letter design in printing. Only a few similar collections have survived down to the present day. The collection contains about 20.000 matrices manufactured by hand for hand-casting between about 1500 and 1850. The matrices, comprising letters, signs and ornaments, are listed in a catalogue containing about 200 items. The collection includes unique roman, italic and Greek typefaces by punchcutters who worked for Christopher Plantin and also provides the first complete documentation of roman, italic Fraktur and Schwabacher typefaces by German punchcutters active in about 1700.
