Étienne Gabriel Peignot, the great bibliographer was born at Arc-en-Barrois, 15th May 1767. Originally a bookseller he later became librarian. No man has done more than he to foster in France a love of bibliography. Every leisure moment he gave to book and pen; he noted everything he read or heard in commonplace books under proper heads – authors, titles, subjects, words, thoughts, references to kindred subjects.
