The University Library Amsterdam possesses one of the most important collections of type specimens in the world. A detailed catalogue of the collection of Dutch typefoundry specimens is now in print. Copy as new!
In ‘Type specimens from Dutch foundries | Dutch typefounders’ specimens’, nearly two thousand items are featured, including a unique proof by the famous die cutter Nikolaas Kis (1650–1702). There is a rich collection of eighteenth-century proofs and a virtually complete collection of nineteenth- and twentieth-century proofs. Every producer – from Nikolaas Kis to Gerard Unger – is introduced by a history that is often very extensive.
It contains indexes by printer, by year of publication (from 1687 to 1997), and by type design. Two family trees provide a clear overview of the complex relationships between the type foundries.
‘Letterproeven van Nederlandse gieterijen’ can be considered a supplement to and a sequel to ‘Typefoundries in The Netherlands’ (1978). It provides a virtually complete overview of the Dutch type foundries from around 1725. The scarce literature has been gathered here, improved, and supplemented with new data.
